The Atlas Mountain Race miniseries

Much like a release of any thrilling docuseries on Netflix, the opening episode sets the stage– a cast of characters introduced, various pathways illuminated, but not yet explored. Similarities to the Netflix model diverge immediately. Unfortunately this miniseries will not be binge-able until much, much later… We are building the ship while sailing it, we don’t know if there is a satisfying conclusion to this story, the only way to find out is to press on!

Denver / Arriola, CO. April 2021.

In late April on a random day at first light, we hit record and began our own miniseries. Our intent is to document the collective journey to the start of the 2021 Atlas Mountain Race. We introduce Ashley Carelock, David wayOfTheWheel, Nik Gilroy, Peder Horner, and Stephen Fitzgerald. Each story is a little different, but the theme which bonds everyone together is the AMR will be an unfiltered experience. Everyone knows there will be lows interspersed among the highs. Yet we all firmly believe we will have fond memories of the Moroccan landscape to recall years from now.

For the uninitiated,

The Atlas Mountain Race is a fixed route, unsupported, single-stage cycling race that starts in Marrakesh, crosses the Moroccan Atlas before taking riders through the Anti-Atlas and on to Agadir. The clock does not stop and there are no prizes. It follows gravel, single and double track and old colonial pistes that have long been forgotten and fallen into disrepair. There is very little tarmac. There is some walking, and at times there is great distances between resupply points.

Future episodes of the miniseries will break down what everyones plans are for food, bikes, tires, bags and obviously the physical and mental prep to take this on.
