RDO LAB // Explorts 2.0

$150.00

Our 2.0 Explorts are the sixth refinement of our well loved and successful RDO LAB bibshorts. As happy as we are with every iteration of the shorts, we always know that there is room left to improve, and with each revision we raise the bar higher and higher on ourselves. The brand new 2.0 series Explorts have a long list of enhancements and revisions, each with the singular goal of making short and long days in the saddle that much more comfortable.

Explorts 2.0 are improved in the following ways:

  • Fabrics: Our main bib fabric is now constructed from a fabric made of recycled plastics, turning cast-off materials into supremely comfortable cycling garments.
  • Fabrics: Our fabrics are now more durable and supportive than our earlier Explorts. The fit remains identical to previous versions of our shorts, but you’ll feel just a bit more support, and the shorts will resist chafing and pilling better.
  • Fabrics: Our main shorts are now constructed of a single panel of fabric. No longer are the leg grippers sewn on, they are now integrated seamlessly into the main legs of each short, and are injected with silicone gripper material to improve cuff positioning.
  • Fit: In addition to changes to the lower short, we’ve added a panel around the belt line which brings up the belt line on average about 4cm per size in the front, and higher in the rear. This higher belt line provides more fit support, and also ensures that no gap between jersey and shorts opens up while the rider is in the riding position.
  • Fit: Our new bib straps are lighter and more elastic, which will improve fit and help riders forget that they are there at all.
  • Function: The higher beltline and new bib strap design allowed us to insert a hidden pocket on the lower back, which is useful storage for those that like to ride in a loose fitting tee, but don’t like losing those back pockets that cycling jerseys traditionally have.

We kept the graphics minimal on these shorts so that they would pair well with most jerseys. The pockets combine to form one of our Rodeo slogans: Get Lost, Get Found, with arrows pointing forward as you pedal your bike.

For those that have 1.0 and 1.1 Explorts, the 2.0 short carry over the modified 1.2 position of our endurance EIT chamois on the men’s bibshorts for better sit bone placement and front coverage.

The cut and chamois of the 2.0 bibshort are tailored around men’s proportions. We have not recieved feedback from women’s Explorts owners about wanting changes to beltline or fit, so we have left that design unchanged, and continue to offer Explorts 1.2 in women’s specific sizes, and those shorts also feature our quick release buckle system.

All RDO LAB cycling clothing is designed and developed in-house from scratch. Cut, fit, materials, and function are all entirely home brewed. Each design and revision is rigorously tested in real world riding before being put into production. We work directly with a sewer to combine rigorously selected fabrics, chamois, zippers, and other components into a high quality and functional final garment. Our fabrics and chamois are sourced from Europe and our sewing is completed in Asia.

Baselayer jersey shown in photos is not included.

Details and features.

Recycled panels on main shorts panel

With our 2.0 shorts we once again took a close look at fabrics. Beyond looking for more comfort and support, we also wanted to create a more durable short, a more supportive short, and one with fabrics that have a better origin story. With 2.0 we sourced an Italian-milled, recycled main short fabric, which takes discarded plastics and brings them back to life in the form of an improved cycling garment. The fit is identical to previous versions of our shorts in terms of sizing, but you’ll notice improved feel with the new fabric, and the new fabric resists abrasion and wear better than previous Explorts.

Revised belt line

In addition to changes to the lower short, we’ve added a panel around the belt line which brings up the belt line on average about 4cm per size in the front, and higher in the rear. This higher belt line provides more fit support, and also ensures that no gap between jersey and shorts opens up while the rider is in the riding position. Original belt line shown in red below.

Integrated rear pocket

The higher rear belt line and revised bib strap design allow us to incorporate a hidden central pocket on the lower back, which brings the total number of pockets on Explorts 2.0 to three, adding to the useful leg pockets that we’ve featured since our first bibshort designs. This central hidden pocket is particularly useful when wearing a more casual tee that does not include rear pockets often found on traditional cycling jerseys.

Seamless leg grippers.

Explorts 2.0 now use a single piece of fabric for the main shorts design, resulting in fewer seams and a more streamlined fit. The silicone injected leg grippers transition seamlessly into the main short for a noticeably elegant overall design.

Ultra distance chamois

Explorts 2..0 carry over the ultra comfortable EIT chamois that we began using in the 1.1 revision of the shorts, but we’ve shifted the chamois forward approximately 4cm on the men’s version of the bibs for better sit bone comfort and front coverage. Women’s bibs remain unchanged from 1.1.  We tested a large number of chamois from a wide range of manufacturers for six months and zeroed in on a market leading medium thickness chamois that isn’t overly padded but provides comfort long into a 10+ hour day or even across an extended multi day bikepacking journey. This isn’t just hyperbole as our bibshorts have been used with great success in ultra distance events the world over, from Tour Divide, to Atlas Mountain Race, to expeditions in Peru, across Europe, and the Americas.

Fit, sizing, returns, and exchanges.

We’ve designed our sizing to be as similar to the sizing of other major brands as possible.

Generally speaking our shorts have a mid to long length on most riders but are designed not to extend past your quads. See photos for fit reference before ordering.

Fit is also highly personal and there will always be variances in fit from person to person. We advise measuring and checking our sizing chart carefully before ordering. If you order the wrong size, we can exchange the shorts for another size if they are brand new / unridden as long as we have your desired size in stock and available. We reserve the right to deny refunds or exchanges for any shorts that appear to have been ridden or worn beyond trying on for fit. We will, at our discretion, repair, exchange, or refund any shorts that are found to have incorrect construction or flaws in materials.
