RDO LAB // Explorts 1.0 bibshorts

Exports are in stock and ready to ship. We have limited quantities but a restock will arrive late June if you don’t see what you are looking for. We will turn off sizes / colors as they sell out so if you see it we have it and if you don’t we hope to see you again later in June!

It was inevitable that our curiosity would eventually lead us to tackle the staple of many cyclist’s wardrobe: The humble bibshorts. We’ve always had opinions about what would make a good bibshort great, but in our early years the timing wasn’t right to take on the challenge. In line with Rodeo tradition, the Explorts were originally named almost in jest, as if bibshorts needed any special thinking or features in order to go exploring in. However, having developed these shorts over the course of two years we were continually inspired to refine our designs until we arrived at the shorts we are now offering. Having now ridden Explorts for everything from short commutes across town to brutal high mountain bikepacking jaunts, we’re proud of the comfort, durability, and functionality of the final product.

We are super pleased to be able to offer a Women’s specific version of the Explorts and partnered with the women of the Rodeo Adventure Posse to dial in the fit and details. The photos of the women’s shorts show a design option with a coral cuff that is specific to the Rodeo Adventure Posse. Women wanting that colorway should look for the 2021 release of our Rodeo Adventure Posse community kit. Otherwise, the Women’s designs are offered with identical colourways as the Men’s

If you receive your new shorts and you did not order the correct size we are happy to help exchange if we have inventory. If we do not have inventory we can refund your purchase. We will not exchange or refund any shorts that show evidence of being worn or ridden beyond an initial try-on to test size. Please be considerate when trying on shorts for size.

Rodeo Explorts 1.0: Details and features.

Main Panels

The main panels of the Explorts bibshort are constructed with durable, dyed, Italian made, recycled Lycra for long term durability. Compared to sublimated fabrics, which fade and become more transparent over time, dyed Lycra retains its color and supportive qualities longer.

Cargo pockets

We considered and tested a wide range of cargo pocket fabrics before choosing the material for our pockets. We wanted the right blend of stretch, structure, and breathability, not fabrics that felt hot or restrictive. When not in use we wanted our pockets to feel like they weren’t there at all and when in use we wanted to pockets to be capable of carrying almost absurd amounts of cargo. Cell phones and energy bars don’t phase our pockets. Fancy stuffing your pockets with a burrito or two for after the ride? Not a problem at all.

"Quick Drawers" bib straps

Bib shorts have always been appreciated for comfort while riding and hated for being so difficult to  take off easily, especially when nature calls. Nobody likes peeling off one to four layers of jerseys and jacket to do what has to be done, but we’ve mostly put up with it for years. Is that really necessary? We decided to try to find a better way, and the Explorts feature a simple and clever quick release strap system that makes it surprisingly easy to take the shorts mostly off without having to peel off your tops. On a single ride this could save a few minutes of inconvenience, and over the course of a weeklong bikepacking race, you may just end up saving a lot more time than that.

In testing we’ve made sure the clips are comfortable and very quickly disappear when riding.

The clips differ slightly than what is shown in these images but the quick release function is identical.

Our Quick Drawers straps are released by squeezing each low profile clip until the straps pop out. Reattaching is easily done, but a little pre-ride practice goes a long way to making sure you’re familiar with the feel out in the field. Securing the straps together with a safety pin where they cross on your back is an extra way to prevent the straps from pulling up over your shoulders when they are released and may make re-attaching them simpler for you. The thin profile of the clips may seem like it could get in the way but with thousands of miles of testing on this system we’ve found that you almost never feel the clips when out riding.

Fleece lined option

Our black and navy blue Explorts are optionally available with fleece lined main panels for extra warmth in the chilly months. Preferences vary a lot per rider, but we ride in these shorts with knee warmers down to just about or below the freezing point and up to about 70f on the warmer end.

Explorts feature an adventure tested Italian chamois that we’ve found works well for single day rides up to about 100 miles. As with many bib shorts you may want to think about chamois cream on rides longer than that or multi day long distance adventures. This will come down to personal preference and saddle choice as well as how rough your riding terrain is.

Explorts have four reflective accents on the lower back and behind each cargo pocket for added night time visibility.

Our laser-cut, siliconized grippers have a mildly compressive fit without cutting off circulation.

Explorts are made from globally sourced fabrics. The 1.0 Explorts primarily feature Italian materials.

Explorts are sewn and constructed in China. Our patterns and designs are proprietary and are the result of over two years of experimenting and revising.

Fit, sizing, returns, and exchanges.

We’ve designed our sizing to fall as in-line with the sizing of other major brands as possible.

Generally speaking our shorts have a mid to long length on most riders but are designed not to extend past your quads. See photos for fit reference before ordering.

Fit is also highly personal and there will always be variances in fit from person to person. We advise measuring and checking our sizing chart carefully before ordering. If you order the wrong size, we can exchange the shorts for another size if they are brand new / unridden as long as we have your desired size in stock and available. We reserve the right to deny refunds or exchanges for any shorts that appear to have been ridden or worn beyond trying on for fit. We will, at our discretion, repair, exchange, or refund any shorts that are found to have incorrect construction or flaws in materials.
